2014-2015 Mini-Grant Program

The 2014-15 East Whittier Arts Education Foundation Mini-Grant application period has ended.

Applicants have been notified regarding the status of their application.  All requests for reimbursement must use the Foundation’s reimbursement form (PDF) and be submitted no later than April 15, 2015.

REMINDER:  Save some of the best examples of your projects, work,  or photos of activities for the Spring 2015 Art Show at the Whittier Art Gallery.  Contact Victoria Jacobs for more information.

Creating a sustainable Arts Education program for all of our schools, Kindergarten through eighth grade, which will allow students to use those talents and skills throughout their education, workplace, and life.

This will end our reliance on the State to fund Arts Education. As everyone knows, the State funds the Arts when funds are available and then cuts it when funding is low. We want to bring consistency to this critical area of our children’s education. We know our community values Arts Education and our Foundation has been formed to bring a solution to the problems created by inconsistent State funding.

The Moon comes to Ocean View School

Every year, Ocean View Elementary School – East Whittier City School District hosts special guests from NASA. Ocean View School Principal – Mrs. Christine Rich has endorsed an exciting and educational science program for our kids in the classroom. For the next few weeks, Moon Rocks and Meteorite samples from Nasa – Johnson Space Facility will be on loan at Ocean View School to educate students in the fields of space / science and geography. At night, these samples will be guests of the Whittier Police Department.

A few years ago, NASA implemented the Lunar and Meteorite Disk Program (K -12). Educators must attend a rigorous workshop training program so that they may have the opportunity to check out these national treasures. Two from Ocean View School’s teachers, Mrs. Quinn and Mr. Sasse, attended this training program at the Columbia Space Center in Downey, CA.

This program consists of six lunar samples or meteorite material samples placed in a lucite disk. Each sample disk is accompanied by written and graphic descriptions. Currently, the Moon Rock samples at Ocean View School are from the Apollo’s 15, 16 and 17 landing sites.

This loan program is designed to be used in the classroom environment for Kindergarten – 12th grades.

Learning in other disciplines may focus on the development of a single skill. The Arts regularly engage multiple skills and talents.

Most people think of the 3’rs of “Reading”, “Riting”, and “Rithmetic” as being the most important part of education.

We have a new challenge today with the skills needed for the 21st Century. A new set of the 3 R’s is needed: Rigor, Relevance and Relationships.

Music, Art, Theatre and Dance are a vital part in the development of these important 21st Century skills.

Colleges and Universities, business and industry assume their applicants have the basic reading, writing and math skills and are looking for these additional specific skills:

Problem solving
Critical Thinking
Making Judgments

Students who participate in the arts, both in school and after school, demonstrate improved academic performance and lower dropout rates.

The Arts can reach students who are not otherwise being reached in school. The Arts have been linked to student motivation and engagement in school, attitudes that contribute to academic achievement.
